Adobe julkaisi 15.10 uuden version suositusta Flash player -softastaan, samanaikaisesti sekä Windowsille, Mac OS X:lle ja Linuxille (mm. Ubuntu-paketit). Uusi versio pitää sisällään mm. kehittyneitä 3D-ominaisuuksia, uuden äänikoodekin (speex) ja uusia ominaisuuksia median streamaukseen. Suurimmat edut uudesta versiosta saa kuitenkin Linux-käyttäjä, sillä uudistus korjaa monia Linux-ympäristön edellisen sukupolven Flash playerin puutteita.
Kymppiversion mukana Linuxille tulevat mm. salatun medialiikenteen (RTMPS) tuki, sekä tuki V4L2 (Video for Linux 2) -rajapintaa käyttäville webikameroille, joihin lukeutuvat lähes kaikki uudemmat kamerat sekä monet läppärien sisäänrakennetut kamerat. Tämä helpottaa suuresti esimerkiksi erilaisten verkkokokousohjelmistojen (mm. Flashmeeting, Adobe ConnectNow / Connect Pro) käyttöä. Pikaisella testillä ainakin Ubuntulle päivitys asentui nikottelematta ja kaikki alkoi vain toimia samantien. Sen sijaan Asuksen eee pc:n Xandros-distribuutioon asennus ei ainakaan perus-debian-paketilla lähtenyt käyntiin – ongelma lienee siinä, että eräät päivityksessä tarvittavat Xandroksen kirjastot eivät ole vielä aivan Ubuntun tasolla. Aionkin päivittää eee pc:n Ubuntu eee:hen heti, kun löydän boottaavan usb-liitäntäisen romppuaseman…

In the Linux environment, the new Flash Player 10 fixes many problems found in the older generation Flash player. The new version supports V4L2 -drivers for webcams – so many new generation webcams and integrated cameras, previously not usable in Flash applications, will now be automatically supported. The new version also includes a support for encrypted media streams (RTMPS), so secured meetings, for example on Adobes ConnectNow / Connect Pro, will now work on Linux machines as well.
The new version also includes more advanced 3D-functionality, new sound codec (Speex), etc. The version was released simultaneously for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux environments on October 15th.
Does it really still work? I am having problems with Z-Star Microelectronics Corp. ZC0305 WebCam. It is being treated as a v4l2 device. It works with Ekiga and Skype but in ACP and OpenMeetings (both use Flash Player) the picture is garbled.
To me it seems like it was working and they managed to break it later.
I am using Shockwave Flash 10.0 r32 on Ubuntu 9.04
Hi Elias and sorry about the huge delay in my answer – I was working outside the Uni for a bit over a year, and thus unable to maintain the blog (to approve comments, etc).
I’ve noticed similar kind of problems on the 9.x Ubuntu machines with a Logitech-webcam (Communicate STX if I recall correctly). There was a forum post somewhere, that concluded that the problem was with some library on the newer (post 8.x) Ubuntu versions. It might be worth giving the Lucid Lynx (10.04) a try to see if it might correct the problem.
